Annual Meeting Minutes
Oregon
Safe Schools and Communities Coalition Annual Meeting
June
2, 2007, Q Center, 69 SE Taylor, Portland, OR 97214
Board members present: Lisa Gnall, Joyce Liljeholm, Joy Wallace,
Ray Johnson, Ron Bloodworth, Tre Luna.
Board
members absent: Theresa Moulter.
Guests: Sally Stevens (social worker); Andrew Janeba (student, present with
two family members), Drew Lindell (student), Ayme Hooper (school
counselor).
Introductions: Joy opened the meeting, and board members introduced themselves.
Accomplishments
Grants: Joy reports that the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition
(hereafter OSSCC) received a grant for the Safe Schools Training.
Youth
Panel: Andrew shared climate information on West Salem HS. He
spoke to the Gay Straight Alliance (hereafter GSA) events they held
this last year, and his own experiences as an FTM (female to male)
student in the school system. Drew shared his experiences with the
GSA Network, and his observations of the San Francisco GSA Convention.
Joyce reported for youth who could not be present, including youth
from Molalla who had their GSA approved this year. They reported
that there is a great deal of resistance at their school and community,
but that everyone who comes to the GSA has been dedicated. Joyce
also spoke for a Seaside youth who started a GSA at his school as
a senior project.
School
Team Report: Tre gave a brief summery of the WolfCreek GSA project.
Resource
Committee Report: Ray reported that we have now been registered
with the state as a non-profit, and have our federal employee number.
Now we must go through the Federal government for our 501c3 status.
He also reports that we had our first benefit this last April, exceeding
our goal in funds if not the attendance. Ray notes that the best
thing about it (apart from being fun) was that the author, music
groups, and restaurant did not charge us.
Annual
Business Meeting
Call
to Order: Joy called meeting to order.
Minutes: The minutes from June 3rd, 2006, were passed by the board.
Treasurer's
Report: Ray reviewed the terms of our fiscal year. He reported
that he had a friend review the budget, and she made suggestions
which he has and will incorporate. He went through the report in
detail, noting that our membership only increased by nine new members,
but membership money increased due to board members canvassing old
members to renew their membership. We received $23,246.28 overall,
have spent $8,453.19 and therefore have a balance of $14,793.09.
Policy
Changes: No changes to the bylaws this year, but four proposed
policy changes. First item is to clarify expectations for board
members; second is to define the role of corresponding secretary;
the third defines the new position of Editor for the newsletter;
the forth is to create a new position of Historian for the OSSCC.
A written vote was called and taken: all polices were approved.
Board
of Directors Election: Ron presented members running for election/re-election.
New/renewing board members include Ray Johnson, Ron Bloodworth,
Theresa Moulter, David Colton, Sally Stevens, Ayme Hooper, and Jessica
Lee. He opened up the floor for additional nominations; there were
none. The Board accepted the slate of new members.
Recruiting
for Committees: Joy introduced the three standing committees.
Sally volunteered to join the Safe Schools Training Committee. Joyce
noted that members are welcome to help present at trainings, and
offered other ways that members can contribute to trainings.
Adjournment of Official Annual Meeting: Joy adjourned the
meeting.
Announcements
Events: The board retreat was discussed, as per the date and the location.
Joy tried to contact Dick Walker, our usual host, but has received
no reply. Other locations were debated. Ray talked about the Safe
Schools Training for 2007, noting the next planning meeting will
be June 19th at Planned Parenthood. He noted upcoming changes to
the event, and some expectations that will remain the same. Joyce
reported that we've been invited to have a booth at the Bend Pride,
June 23rd, and asked for volunteers. She also noted that the GSA
conference will be in Albequerque (NM) this year, and that there
are youth and adults that we might consider asking. Ron extended
appreciation for Tre Luna, and the board thanked him for taking
the secretary position in 2006-07. Ron also extended thanks to the
Q Center for providing the place, and it was suggested we should
send a thank you letter.
Door
Prizes: Lisa organized distribution of the door prizes.
Closing
Hopes
and Visions for the Future: Each member shared a hope for OSSCC
for the next year.
