2009-2010 OSSCC Achievements
Joyce Liljeholm gave an overview of the 2009 Safe Schools Fall Training in Eugene, October 23 & 24. Attendance was primarily from the Eugene area, but with
students from as far as Astoria participating. The 2009 Training had official support
from the Eugene 4J School District. Attendance was lower than normal due to the
training coinciding with Oregon's peak week for H1N1 infections.
Matthew Geraths gave an overview of the October 28 "Straightlaced" fundraiser.
$2,181 was raised through ticket sales and donations. After the success of the
fundraiser, OSSCC purchased a copy of the film, which had been loaned out four
times so far.
Austin Lea gave an overview of the Oregon Queer Youth Summit (OQYS), which will take
place May 15 at City Hall in Portland. The OQYS planning process was a youth effort
between Portland youth and staff from OSSCC and SMYRC. Over 100 have registered for
the Summit, which will feature over 20 youth-led
workshops as well as a keynote address and proclamation from Portland Mayor Sam Adams.
Zena Britadesco gave a brief overview of OSSCC's new ad-hoc Presentations Committee.
The Committee includes representatives from OSSCC, SMYRC, Portland State University,
the Multnomah County Health Department, Basic Rights Oregon, and others. The goals of
the committee are to increase communication across organizations and to coordinate
representation of LGBTQ youth issues at professional development meetings and
conferences across the state.
Quarterly Roundtable
Sally Stevens, Jenn Burleton and Zena facilitated the Safe Schools Roundtable portion
of the meeting. Sally gave an overview of the previous Roundtable meetings.
Participants introduced themselves and what they wanted to get from the Roundtable.
Two goals were approved to focus the Roundtable at this stage: 1) synchronicity of
services and 2) pooling fundraising and other event planning efforts.
Some discussion of the fall Safe Schools Training as the next major collaborative
event was touched on.
